On October 9th, Melita Business and Smart Technologies held an insightful event at the Melita Data Centre in Madliena—Safeguard Against Cyber Attacks: Prevention and Response Strategies. The event addressed the growing threat of cyber-attacks and discussed how businesses can prepare with the right strategies and tools.

Cybersecurity: A Concern for All Businesses

Cyber threats are no longer just an issue for big corporations. Every business, regardless of size or sector, needs to be on guard. At the event, Keith Cutajar, a leading digital forensics expert from CY4, shared alarming statistics: over 450,000 malicious programs are registered every day, and 94% of malware is delivered through phishing emails. This means that every business that uses email is at risk, making cybersecurity everyone’s responsibility.

Ensuring Business Continuity

With cyber threats becoming more advanced, it’s critical for businesses to have a solid recovery system in place to stay operational during disruptions. Robert Azzopardi, CTO of Smart Technologies, stressed the importance of Disaster Recovery and Backup services via Smart Cloud, which are key to maintaining business continuity and resilience in the face of these challenges.

Automating Cybersecurity for Efficiency

Automation is also playing a significant role in cybersecurity. Roderick Farrugia, CIO at Melita Limited, explained how automating security processes speeds up threat detection and response while freeing up cybersecurity experts for more strategic tasks. Roderick explained how implementing automatic cyber security solutions not only boosts efficiency but also ensures compliance and helps maintain team morale by reducing the burden of repetitive monitoring tasks.

Tackling Cybercrime in Malta

Inspector Muscat from the Malta Police Cyber Crime Unit sat down with John Montanaro, CMO at Smart Cloud, to discuss the national efforts to fight cybercrime. The conversation explored how businesses can report cybercrimes, and how the unit collaborates with Europol and Interpol to tackle cross-border cyber threats.

The event attracted over 80 professionals from various industries, offering them the chance to connect with experts and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Melita Data Centre.
