In 2022 Melita became a signatory of the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) which drives climate action within the private sector. In doing this, Melita has committed to a 42% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030,

As part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard and promote the environment, Melita joined forces with another 12 committed businesses to form the Malta ESG Alliance (MESGA).

MESGA is a private sector initiative established to focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities in Malta. To kick off, the alliance is prioritising decarbonisation, with every founding member committing to tangible and measurable projects that will reduce their carbon footprint.

Each of the MESGA members has committed to a SMART decarbonisation target. Melita has set the short-term goal that, by early 2023, 10% of the electricity needed in its daily operations will come from solar energy. The longer-term aim is to switch to 100% green energy, ahead of the SBTi commitment.

The other founding members have all committed to different projects with varying goals that aim at decreasing their carbon footprint. It is estimated that when all projects from all 13 organisations are put together this, will lead to an equivalent of a minimum of 18,000 tonnes of CO2 saved emissions per year. This is comparable to the total annual emissions of a town the size of Marsaxlokk.

Transitioning to a decarbonised way of working is important for Malta but it is also good for business

The Malta ESG Alliance will be a place where members share best practices and learn from each other, increasing the efficiency and efficacy of their efforts in this green transition. Whilst working on the respective projects, progress and results will be made public to increase awareness and responsibility in others, and encourage them to follow the same path.

Joining Melita Ltd, the other founding members of the Malta ESG Alliance are APS Bank Plc, AX Group Plc, Toly Products Ltd, Bank of Valletta Plc, HSBC Bank Malta Plc, GO Plc, International Hotel Investments Plc, MAPFRE Malta, Alberta Group, Malta Public Transport Services (Operations) Ltd, MEDSERV Operations Ltd, and PG Group Plc.

The scope is that through their actions, members will inspire change and motivate businesses of all types and sizes, to adopt the values of ESG and move towards a more sustainable future. MESGA now aims to recruit new members and expand towards all forms of economic sectors.
